“Each sheep gives me each day a kilo of bread, but this bread is bitter because it is a job among thorns”
‘Pane amaro’, in english ‘bitter bread’, is the story of a Sicilian family who maintains, through many sacrifices, the tradition of an ancient craft, that of shepherds.
Beyond the romantic vision of the shepherd’s labour, the Sicilian countryside is rough and tough and keeps its people on the margins of society.
Theirs is a job that does not admit rest and that requies a solitary life made of social exclusion, respect, bitterness and strain.
A life in symbiosis with their animals that become food, sustenance and company. A job ‘in the midst of thorns’ that scratch you before giving its most bitter fruit.
