Italian Landscape

The sign of a former taxi garage becomes an unusual decorative element of a suburban landscape. At the same time, old abandoned American cars appear as installations on the sides of a country road or on the roof of a building. The bourgeois taste imported from the sumptuous villas of the West Coast is mixed and reinterpreted in Italian style…

In Italian landscape project Graziano Panfili proposes a specific analysis of the landscape, of the way in which one of the most significant events in the social history of our country – the emigration to the United States of America of the last century and the subsequent return to the homeland after nearly half a century – has left traces which can be detected in aesthetical and even cultural preferences visible in different parts of southern Italy, an area in which most of the great migratory movements took place.

Traces are still evident today, especially in the memories of those who dedicated a lifetime in realizing the “American dream”, with the hope that one day they would be able to return to their homeland as “winners”, thus exploiting the savings accumulated in years of hard work. These savings would allow them to build a house and bring home the car bought overseas. You can still see the American dream in their eyes, with everything else they brought home with them, part of the country which helped them to be reborn and which they now show off like a trophy.
